Asians in Music Present Sandbox

An incredible opportunity
SANDBOX is a fully-funded programme to allow Pan-Asian-Kiwi bands and artists to learn how to navigate songwriting and recording.
The 8 chosen acts will walk away with a professionally mixed track and a live performance of their song

Collab Writing Sessions

Paired with an established Pan-Asian-Kiwi artist / producer / songwriter, you will have two sessions together to write a song.

Demo Recording Session

Work with our team to make a demo of your song and further develop the production elements of your song.

Final Studio Recording

Final recording session at a fully-equipped studio, working with a recording engineer (and sessions musicians as needed!).

Mix Session

Your song will be mixed by a professional mix engineer, who will also provide a feedback session to discuss the direction and intention of the mix with the artist.

Live Performance

A live gig will be held at Movespace’s Rooftop venue to give the artists an opportunity to showcase their work in front of an audience.

A new or emerging Pan-Asian-Kiwi artist, and
* Pan-Asian-Kiwi means that you are a New Zealand-based artist with whakapapa (a sense of belonging) to Asia
* New or emerging means that you will benefit from the learning journey of working with established music industry professionals, because you have limited experience of doing so.
Not signed to a record label or publisher, and
Basically means that you need the extra support to get opportunities to find collaborators, record in a studio, release your music, and etc.
Someone who has had some musical training OR practical experience in music, and
Anyone who has some musical ability (theory or performance or both), and has tried writing their own music.
Able to commit time to participate in all components of the SANDBOX programme in Auckland
August – September (weekday working hours likely)
  • 2 x Co-writing sessions – 2.5 hrs each
  • 1 x Demo recording session – 4 hrs
September – December (weekday working hours likely)
  • 1 x Final recording session – 4 hrs
  • 1 x Mix feedback session – 1-2 hrs

Clarissa Chai

Co-founder, Asians in Music (AIM)

Clarissa is an NZ-born music composer, songwriter, producer and sound engineer who grew up in Malaysia where she lived for 16 years before returning to New Zealand.
She currently works with TEAM152 and is part of an indie-folk duo called “Something They Call Myth”

Mia Caintic

Co-founder, Asians in Music (AIM)

Mia is a singer-songwriter based in Auckland, New Zealand. Born in Manila, Philippines, she moved to New Zealand with her family at the age of 9.
She is currently working on new music and is about to release her debut single this year, as Ms. Mia.

SquareSums&Co is an Auckland-based arts/artist management and creative producing firm led by Yee Yang ‘Square’ Lee and Sums Selvarajan that represents a bespoke roster of performing artists, storytellers, entertainers and works, with a special interest in crossover, cross-cultural and cross-genre work and talent.

WHERE THE ASIANS AT‽ (AOTEAROA)

Where the Asians At‽ have the kaupapa of advancing Asian visibility and representation in the Aotearoa music industry.
WTAA‽ was established as a Facebook community group in September 2021 to search for, connect with, and gather insights from Pan-Asian-Kiwi (PAK) musicians in Aotearoa. WTAA‽ evolved into an independent label in February 2022, and is now shaping up to be an artist and label services bureau for PAK artists in Aotearoa.
In July 2022 WTAA‽ provided a platform for PAK artists in Tāmaki Makaurau to showcase their talents at the inaugural ASIAN(SOUND)SCAPES event at Auckland’s Potters Park – featuring 50 acts and over 130 PAK artists over the two day busking extravaganza.
